How rain becomes snow, sleet or freezing rain
1. Snow: The air is below freezing all the way down, so the snowflakes that form in the cloud reach the ground as snow.
2. Sleet: The flakes melt in a layer of warm air aloft, then fall through a deep layer of below-freezing air near the ground and refreeze into ice pellets before they land.
3. Freezing rain: The flakes melt in a deep warm layer aloft, and the below-freezing air at the ground is too thin to refreeze them. The drops freeze when they hit the ground, trees and power lines.
4. Rain: The warm air reaches the ground, so the flakes melt and land as rain.
