Tonight

Model updated 2:05 a.m.

Tuesday, Nov. 3

Clouds all night.

Sunset 5 p.m., sunrise 6:54 a.m. Fully dark from 6:38 p.m. to 5:16 a.m. Cloud (Euro, the larger of its total and highest layer): 7 p.m. 100%, 9 p.m. 100%, 11 p.m. 100%, 1 a.m. 100%, 3 a.m. 100%, 5 a.m. 100%. The moon, 30% lit, rises at 1:54 a.m.

Fully dark The sun 18° or more below the horizon, past astronomical twilight: its scattered light is fainter than starlight and other natural light. U.S. Naval Observatory Total, high, middle and low: cloud cover (darker: more) Moon: its height in the sky, shaded by how much is lit

How to read the strip

The strip runs from sunset to sunrise: twilight (civil, nautical, then astronomical, the sun 6°, 12° and 18° down), then full dark. Clouds are the Euro model's total, high, middle and low cloud for each hour; the model runs every 3 hours here, 6 hours after 6 days, and Open-Meteo fills the hours between. The moon is drawn by its height above the horizon, shaded by the share of it lit. A smoke row shows when the PM2.5 forecast (Copernicus CAMS, through Open-Meteo) reaches 35.5 µg/m³, the bottom of the EPA's "unhealthy for sensitive groups" range: smoke may dim the sky. (The home page's air badge, which is about health, starts at the EPA's Moderate level, 9.1.)

  • Golden hour 4:18 to 5 p.m. (sunset); 6:54 to 7:36 a.m. (sunrise)
  • Blue hour 5:18 to 5:42 p.m.; 6:12 to 6:36 a.m.
  • Fully dark 6:38 p.m. to 5:16 a.m.
  • Lens Dew likely on the lens: low 49°, Dew point The temperature air must cool to before it is saturated. A higher dew point means more moisture in the air. National Weather Service glossary 49° (NWS)

Planets tonight

Three of the five bright planets are up tonight: Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

  • Mars Magnitude How bright a star or planet looks in our sky. The scale runs backward: lower is brighter, and 5 steps is 100 times the light. NASA Marshall Space Flight Center 0.8Rises 11:42 p.m.; still up at sunrise.Climbing all night: 61° up in the south by 6:24 a.m.

Aurora

SWPC updated Nov. 2, 6:30 p.m.

NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center

Quiet. SWPC forecasts Kp A 0 to 9 index of how disturbed Earth's magnetic field is; 5 or more is a geomagnetic storm. NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center 2 at most tonight; Faribault needs about 7.

  • Solar wind The flow of particles and magnetic fields outward from the sun, typically near 350 km/s. National Weather Service glossary 359 km/s (803,000 mph); Bz The north-south direction of the interplanetary magnetic field. When it points south, opposite Earth's field, geomagnetic disturbances are much more severe. NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center glossary −1 nT, south, which favors aurora (5:55 a.m.)
  • Kp now 0, SWPC's estimate (6 a.m.)
  • OVATION The model behind SWPC's aurora forecast: where the aurora will be and how strong, 30 to 90 minutes ahead. NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center 0% chance of aurora overhead here, and at most 1% within 6° of latitude to the north (5:52 a.m.)

Kp through Thursday: highest 3.67, Thursday midnight to 3 a.m.

SWPC's 3-Day Forecast, Kp by 3-hour block from Tuesday 6 a.m. to Thursday 6 p.m.: highest 3.67. No block reaches Kp 7.

The aurora log

Kp record updated Nov. 2, 6:23 a.m.

Kp since 1932: GFZ Potsdam

Kp 7 or more on 387 nights since 1932; 35 of them since 1993 were clear here.

KFBL's reports settle 73 of the 85 nights since 1993; the rest have an hour with no report. The last clear Kp 7 night here was July 3-4, 2026 (Kp 7).

The log lists Kp and what the airport reported for the sky. It never says anyone saw an aurora.

The aurora log: a night counts when a 3-hour Kp of 7 or more (GFZ Potsdam's record, since 1932) falls in its fully dark hours. Since 1993 it is clear here when every report from the Faribault airport (KFBL) in those hours lists only clear skies or a few clouds, with a report in each full clock hour of them; any scattered, broken or overcast layer makes it "cloud reported", and a full hour with no report "no full record". The airport's sensor reports the clouds it can measure, so high thin cloud may not show.
